Is That RO Repair Worth Paying For?

Someone has quoted you a number. Before agreeing, weigh it against the age of the machine. This tool will tell you when the answer is no — even though we are the people who would carry out the repair.

What actually decides it

• The half rule — once a repair passes roughly half the cost of a new unit, replacing usually wins. You get a fresh warranty and a new membrane rather than one mended part.
• Repeat repairs — two or more repairs in a year rarely stops at two. That is a machine telling you it is finished.
• Age above spec — most domestic ROs are built for 8 to 10 years. Past that, spares get scarce and housings turn brittle.
• What is failing — a filter or float valve is routine. A cracked body, a leaking tank or repeated pump failure is terminal.

Rough guide

A comparable new domestic purifier fitted costs roughly ₹9,000 to ₹16,000 in Nellore. Under about a fifth of that, a repair is almost always worth it on a healthy machine. Above about half, replacement is usually the sounder buy. Over ten years old with a large repair, we will normally advise you not to spend the money.
